Working All Things for Good

“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Rom. 8:28)

This weekend, I was thinking about the reason why we go through hard times. I was reminded of a verse from Romans that talks about how God is working all things for our good. Sometimes, we feel like we understand what God is doing when he gives us good things – good friends or enjoyable experiences. Things are going good, so that means God is working things for good. But what about when things are not so good? Right now, God has been teaching me that even the not-so-good seasons of life serve an important purpose in our walk with God.

God is working all things for our good, even things that are hard or difficult for us, even the things that should depress us or destroy us. When things are good, we can have joy in Him. When things are hard, we need to cling to Him. When we say God is working all things for our good, what do we mean by “our good”? Good does not mean what makes us feel good, safe or comfortable. Good also does not mean getting everything that we pray for or dream about. Our ultimate good is whatever experiences or circumstances bring us closer to Christ. Sometimes, we are faced with a trial to help us remember who we are and our true source of hope. Trials can help us remember that everything in this world – things we often cling to – is passing away. The physical world is a vapor of wind, a wave in the ocean, sand falling through your fingers. Trials, challenges and hardships in our lives remind us of what is truly permanent and where we can fix our hope.
